Built, finished and put in the pull out "box" for Scary Sharp plates on more full extension bottom mounted glides. Got really into garnet shellac -and got carried away - 20-30 coats.

It was time to start figuring out the drawer faces and cabinet doors. I like to make the wood the focus of pieces and, given how well this cabinet was turning out, the wood for the door panels and drawer faces had to be something special.

I'm always on the look out for interesting wood and had some really strange grained pine or spruce - not sure which in 3/4 inch 8 inch wide boards. I'm told that the grain pattern is called Bear Clawed - it does look like a bear had clawed the wood. If I used any of this special stash it had to be stretched out somehow. The logical way to do that was to resaw one board to get book matched pairs for the door panels. Cut a 16 inch piece - big enough for a panel - and band sawed it in half. That worked so I resawed the rest of the board.

Here's two of the three bookmatched pairs for the cabinet door panels. You can see why the grain panel is called Bear Clawed, though I see it more like flocks of flying birds.. No photo can do this stuff justice - the look changes with a slight change in lighting or just moving your head a foot left/right or up and down.

Here are three of the panels with 10 or 15 coats of brushed on, 1 pound cut dewaxed garnet shellac. Interesting yes?
