Once the sphere has been turned and parted off the finial and icicle can be turned to fit it - literally as well as proportionately. There are only three tricky steps when turning them - the fit of the tenon to the hole in the sphere - the undercutting of the tenon;s "shoulder" - and the parting off the piece at the tip of the finial / icicle.
