"Ditch the middle rail on the right, tall narrow door and divide up the left, square door into two tall narrow shapes - similar to the right tall narrow door."
Hmmm - makes sense - let's see what that would look like.
That definitely looks better. Gonna go with this one.
BUT ...
When I did the doors and installed them the drawers idea didn't look quite right. When you take off two inches on each end and an inch and a half top and bottom, like the drawer stiles and rails it wouldn't leave much room for the bear clawed panels.
What if I made the applied drawer fronts look like another door? A little PhotoShop noodling and here's what it could look like. (The finish on the top is not transparent - 25 to 30 coats of 1 pound shellac can get VERY reflective - and not hide the grain under it).
This could work. Made a masonite template, got out the plunge router, a quarter inch bit, the corressponding template guide and a piece of poplar. Quickly discovered a shortcoming of the Dewalt 621 plunge router - it's small base. The space for the panels works out to about 6 1/4 inches square That means to route out the center of the panel's space the base of the router must be over 12 1/2 inches in diameter. Guess I'm going to pay a visit to Pat Warner's site to see if he makes such a base for the DW621.
My usual "wing it" approach to projects with what I've got now influencing what I do next once again presents challenges. Interesting this woodworking thing.
